Homeowners and builders misunderstand risks

of indoor air pollution

Panasonic Corporation of North America has released the results of a survey it says shows homeowners and homebuilders lack an awareness of the health risks associated with indoor air pollution and the impact of technological solutions to improve indoor air quality (IAQ). The survey of Canadian and U.S. homeowners and builders also found significant changes in participants’ perceptions and behaviours when they were presented with scientific findings around IAQ and health. Post-survey, for instance, one in four homeowners showed increased interest in investing in IAQ solutions, while 62 per cent of homebuilders said they would recommend IAQ technologies to homeowners. The technologies most likely to be recommended by builders were HEPA filtration and high-performance HVAC systems. The most compelling IAQ fact for both groups were life-threatening health risks, followed by the risk of off-gassing from volatile organic compounds in many building materials.
