BC removes sales tax on heat pumps, increases it on fossil

fuel systems

As of April 1, 2022 the province of British Columbia will increase the provincial sales tax (PST) from seven per cent to 12 per cent on fossil fuel combustion systems, while removing the PST from heat pumps. The PST rate increase applies to fossil fuel combustion systems that heat or cool indoor spaces or water. According to the province, that includes any system that may rely on, in all or in part, the combustion of coal, kerosene, heavy fuel oil, heating oil, natural gas or propane and is designed, in all or in part, for indoor use and includes: central forced air furnaces, unit heaters, fireplaces, boilers, storage water heaters, instantaneous water heaters and air conditioners. It also includes any parts or components that are part of the system on the initial purchase of the system. Heat pumps will be exempt from PST.
