Atlantic premiers call for meeting on new clean fuel standards |
The Council of Atlantic Premiers is calling for a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to discuss what they say is the disproportionate impact of the new federal Clean Fuel Regulations on Canadians in the Atlantic region.
The Council met virtually with Stephen Guilbeault, minister of Environment and Climate change in May and on June 21, to ask for options to reduce the impact of the new regulations, which it says will increase the cost of fuel and other essential goods and services in Atlantic Canada.
The regulations, which came into force on July 1, are part of the federal government’s climate plan, and require suppliers to reduce the carbon intensity of gasoline and diesel fuels they produce for use in Canada. In May the Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer indicated that the carbon tax will increase costs for Canadian households by 2030.
