The federal government introduced its Spring Economic Update 2026 in late April, with numerous initiatives to help workers and young people starting their careers. As part of the plan the government is launching Team Canada Strong to “recruit, train and hire 80,000 to 100,000 new Red Seal skilled trades workers by 2030-31.” That includes $2 billion to help young people begin working in the skilled trades through job placements that will lead to apprenticeships, with up to $10,000 per apprentice to support employers, especially small- and medium-sized businesses. The government will also offer a $400 per week Apprenticeship Training grant to apprentices for a total payment of up to $16,000 per apprentice while they are in in-class training.
