Feds pledge to support mobility among skilled trades workers

The federal government has announced Bill C-222 to offer mobility tax deductions for skilled tradespersons and apprentices starting with the 2022 tax year. That includes expenses that are not currently deductible under the Moving Expense Deduction.

The Labour Mobility Deduction for Tradespeople will allow workers to deduct certain costs associated with travelling or relocating for a construction activity at a job site located at least 80 km away from home. Introduced during Budget 2022, the bill will allow tradespeople and apprentices who do not receive financial assistance from an employer to deduct up to $4,000 in eligible expenses per year.
