Construction workers walk off the job in Ontario

More than 15,000 residential construction workers are now on strike in Ontario, after collective agreements for 30 sectors of the residential construction industry expired on April 30, 2022.

The strike is expected to impact construction projects throughout the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in terms of disrupted scheduling, delayed closings and increased costs.

Workers on strike are part of six sectors from Local 183 of the Labourer’s International Union of North America (LiUNA), and include those who do high-rise forming on buildings, self-levelling flooring workers, house framers, and tile, railing, carpet and hardwood installers. The strike impacts workers on high-rise and low-rise housing in the GTA, central and southern Ontario, and parts of southwestern and eastern Ontario.

The union is pushing for contractor associations in the province to return to the bargaining table with proposals for compensation that meets inflation and cost of living increases, and which reflect the essential services workers performed during the pandemic.

According to the Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON), approximately 20 sectors of the industry have reached an agreement, while four are still bargaining, have gone to arbitration, or have reached a tentative agreement.

Residential construction sector strikes can start on May 1 every three years under the Ontario Labour Relations Act, but must end by June 15. Outstanding disputes are then settled through binding arbitration.
